Soft green touch on a new development

The new development of individually styled period houses was softened into the environment by the judicious installation of evergreen Elveden Instant Hedge.

Common Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifloia’) was chosen for its soft, pale green, fresh look and its even, vigorous growth that provides a year round hedge which reliably screens any new build project. Common Yew (Taxus baccata) was used on the front boundary to add a touch of classic evergreen maturity and sense of time to the development.

Tree Moving

On very cold January day, we worked together with the course manager Simon Graham and his groundsman and our 1.6 metre tree spade machine.

As at many golf courses, this prestigious club has several planted copses that can be used to redesign the course as various stages.  Suitable specimen trees were selected from one of these areas of densely planted trees on the golf course and then transplanted to carefully planned and marked out positions on the seventh and eleventh fairways. The trees required guying systems and carefully watering for two years, after which they will be fully established.

Compared to a traditional size hedge transplants, our unique Elveden Instant Hedge products provides immediate maturity.  Beech is good hedge for year round seasonally variable interest; it holds onto its bronze autumnal leaves well throughout winter, thereby providing adequate winter screening, despite being deciduous, in the spring the leaves emerge a bright glossy green.  It is a very traditional English hedge and remains one of our best sellers.

Sensitive Vegetation Clearance

Sensitive Vegetation Clearance

Practicality Brown worked on the £380m road building project on the A46 Newark, over a number of months.

Some of the clearance included ecologically sensitive work such as stump grubbing in Great Crested Newt habitat. We worked closely with
main contractor Balfour Beatty Plc and ecologists from Scott Wilson to carry out the works thoughtfully using the right equipment at the right time.

Luton Dunstable Busway – Vegetation Clearance

Practicality Brown carried out a vegetation clearance programme on the Luton Dunstable busway for main contractor, Bam Nuttall on behalf of Luton Borough Council. The site was a 12km section of disused railway comprising of both trees and scrub, running adjacent to live roads and railway from the centre of Dunstable to the opposite side of Luton. Traffic and Pedestrian Management was necessary in order to clear vegetation from the nine rail over bridges along the route, all of which intersect with busy live roads. The scheme provides a state of the art guided bus connection between Luton and Dunstable.

The contract had various constraints, including a condensed programme. As well as mechanised vegetation clearance, we provided ecology advice and sensitive management with Badgers, Bats, Slow Worms, Nesting Birds and important Flora.
