Description
Betlua alba, also known as Betula pubescens or Downy Birch, is a tall, deciduous tree rather similar to Betula pendula (silver birch).
Downy birch shoots are greyish red purple, covered in short, soft, shiny white hairs. The leaves are rounded, often nearly circular, with broad rounded teeth. The bark of downy birch is less white and papery than the silver birch.
It produces light green foliage that shoots early and becomes orange-yellow in the autumn. Downy Birch provides food and habitat for lots of wildlife.
This hardy tree prefers damper environments, and tolerates shady conditions.
Maximum Height: 20 metres
