Description
Cupressocyparis leylandii or commonly referred to as just Leylandii. Also known as Leyland cypress, Cupressus x leylandii, x Cuprocyparis leylandii or Cupressocyparis leylandii. This is a very large and extremely vigorous species hybrid. Cupressocyparis leylandii is valued for its fast growth habit, sturdy constitution, and dense, evergreen foliage which provides an effective screen.
It is a hybrid of Cupressus macrocarpa the Monterey cypress and Cupressus nootkatensis the Nootka cypress.
The dense, fast growing foliage can reach 30m. If left unchecked can grow to heights of 15m in as many years. Therefore it has the reputation to become a nuisance. However when pruned and controlled this plant can be very effective. We would recommend pruning 2-3 times in the growing season.
Leyland cypress is its best when used in open spaces for broad scale coverage or as a windbreak, where it can grow without restriction, but can also be used effectively as hedging and screening in smaller spaces, provided strict discipline is observed in maintenance. It tolerates a wide range of conditions including coastal areas and chalky soils.
This tree is available as feathered version and also in a pleached format, which is perfect for screening in narrow gardens.
We have 2 options in stock at the moment pleached trees or espalier screens. Both work really well for this plant as they can, with regular pruning maintain their thick screening. As they come on frames its as easy as pruning to the frame.
We also have this available as an evergreen screen grown on galvanised steel frames with several plants grown in each container, covering each screen completely as an espalier frame. Please ask for details
