Description
Fraxinus excelsior is a vigorous deciduous tree, with pale brown bark, dark green, pinnate leaves and small deep purple flowers. Also known as common ash or European Ash it has conspicuous bunches of winged fruits in late summer and autumn. When fully grown they can reach 35m in height. Leaves in autumn turn a rich shade of yellow.
We are currently unable to import Ash trees due to ash dieback disease. The disease is caused by the fungus Chalara fraxinea and leads to leaf loss and for some death. Ash dieback is now present in most parts of England, although the severity of the disease varies locally. The Arboricultural Association has compiled this useful guide please follow the link for more information.
