Description
Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ is a versatile evergreen particularly suited to the UK environment. It makes a fine tree with a rounded growth habit which responds well to pruning. Originally from New Zealand.
The Red Robin’s stand out feature is the vibrant red new shoots during spring, which contrast with the white blossom. The bright new leaves change to a deep, glossy green as they mature. In summer they are complemented with small round red berries. The RHS has given this tree an Award of Merit.
What is a pleached tree?
A pleached tree has a single clear stem and a crown of branches that have been trained horizontally on a supporting frame. Frames can be made of wood, metal or bamboo. Generally pleached trees are planted in a row and can create a continuous narrow screen, or like a hedge on stilts.
They are low maintenance as the branches are already trained onto a frame work. Just once or twice a year they can be pruned and any new growth tucked in or tied in. They are especially good for screening, whilst allowing light in and around the stems. We have some excellent younger trees in stock at the moment. Younger trees can be a more economical way to buy pleached trees, and over time the framework of branches will fill out and mature. The main benefit of any pleached tree is the immediate impact on the structure and framework of the garden
Why choose Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ as a pleached tree?
Pleached trees can bring screening, privacy and a framework to a garden. They can also make great windbreaks. For new-build homes and modern gardens, privacy can be a major concern and pleached trees can provide a stylish and space efficient result. They give a formal look to a garden that works well in both traditional or contemporary design.
Our pleached trees are grown with a clear stem of approximately 1.8m and the head of the tree is trained against a frame approximately 1m high x 1.2m wide.
Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ pleached trees are in stock now in a variety of sizes see below.
As well as this pleached version, which is useful for creating privacy and excellent for screening, we also supply this versatile evergreen as a full feathered tree, as a standard clear stem tree and as an instant hedge.
Another choice is an evergreen screen grown on galvanised steel frames with several plants grown in each container, covering each screen completely as an espalier frame; these are available as Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ and Photinia x fraseri ‘Robusta’.
