Description
Populus alba or the White Poplar tree has stunning silver / green leaves . It thrives on wet soils and is very adaptable and can be coppiced to create a lower growing multi-stem tree to make it more suitable for smaller spaces and gardens, this management option shows off its foliage to the full. Populus alba will grow pretty much anywhere, even on the coast, with its amazing foliage display turning to yellow in the autumn.
This deciduous tree is not a native, but naturalised in the UK.
Great as a coastal windbreaker, tolerating salty winds.
Important tree for wildlife as many moth caterpillars feed on the leaves. The catkins are an early source of pollen and nectar for bees and other insects and the seeds are eaten by birds. Produces fluffy cotton like seeds often in abundance.
