Description
Prunus avium or wild cherry is a pretty native tree. Also known as bird cherry or Cheshire merry tree, amongst many other names. Single white flowers are produced in the spring and its green leaves turn gold through to red in the autumn before leaf fall. Prunus avium is a great tree to support our range of wildlife. All flowering cherries prefer free draining soils.
Loved by wildlife in the spring the flowers provide an early source of nectar and pollen for the bees. The cherries are then eaten by birds as well as many mammals. The foliage is the main food source for caterpillars of many moth species.
