Description
Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’ or Portuguese Laurel Myrtifolia dark green leaves emerge against dark red shoots. Fragrant racemes of creamy white flowers are produced in April-May followed by red fruits turning dark glossy purple.
Prunus lusitanica as a standard evergreen tree is useful for screening, as a windbreak and as a brilliant dark foil for other plants. We also have Portuguese Laurel as a Practical Instant Hedge™
It is widely used for hedging, but can also be an attractive specimen tree, including as a feathered tree. The RHS has given this tree an Award of Merit.
Portuguese Laurel likes most soils including clay and unlike Common Laurel is also at home on shallow chalk. Prunus lusitanica can be planted in either sun or shade, but it dislikes wet ground.
Ideal Conditions: Thrives on all soils
