Description
Tsuga canadensis is a vigorous, broadly conical evergreen tree..
Eastern Hemlock has deeply furrowed, purplish-grey bark and short dark green, needle-like leaves which are white beneath. Widely spreading horizontal branches which droop slightly at the tips for a layered effect.
It is superb when planted as a solitary specimen in parks and large gardens, where its shape can be appreciated. It matures 25-30m high.
Best in moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soil in full sun or part shade but shelter from cold, drying winds; very shade tolerant.
